PVFCCo-Phu My: Where Traditional Values Converge into Sustainable Development Standards
Twenty-two years after officially taking over and operating the Phu My Fertilizer Plant (September 21, 2004 – September 21, 2026), the journey of PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (PVFCCo-Phu My) is defined by far more than just fertilizer and chemical products or commercial milestones. From fertilizers to industrial chemicals, from plant floors to farming fields, from workforce welfare to community engagement, and from governance frameworks to long-term strategy, the traditional values cultivated over more than two decades have converged into standards for sustainable development.
On September 21, 2004, the Phu My Fertilizer Plant was officially handed over by the Technip–Samsung consortium to the owner, marking the beginning of Vietnam’s supply autonomy in urea fertilizer for domestic agriculture through the operation of the country’s largest urea facility at that time (capacity of 740,000 tons/year, meeting approximately 40% of national demand). September 21 subsequently became the annual Traditional Day of PVFCCo-Phu My.

In September 2026, on the occasion of its Traditional Day, PVFCCo-Phu My was honored for the first time by Forbes Vietnam among the Top 50 ESG Leading Companies in Vietnam 2026, standing as the only enterprise in Vietnam's fertilizer and chemical industry recognized on this year's list.
Twenty-two years ago, a central mission of PVFCCo-Phu My—formerly the PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Company—was to operate the Phu My Fertilizer Plant safely and efficiently, deliver high-quality fertilizers to farmers nationwide, and elevate domestic fertilizer manufacturing capacity.
Twenty-two years later, developmental requirements have grown deeper and broader: efficient production must go hand in hand with resource conservation; corporate growth must align with responsibility toward employees, communities, and the environment; and governance must become increasingly transparent, modern, and adaptive to evolving standards.

From Energy Optimization to Value Chain Greening
For a chemical and fertilizer enterprise, the E (Environment) pillar begins directly on the production line. Manufacturing this product range requires substantial energy and resources; therefore, environmental stewardship is not merely about end-of-pipe waste management, but starts with optimizing the efficiency of every unit of energy and raw material consumed within the plant.
At the Phu My Fertilizer Plant, optimizing the cooling water system saves approximately 7 million kWh of electricity per year; implementing the Advanced Process Control (APC) system at the Ammonia Workshop contributes to lower energy intensity; proactively shutting down compressors during unnecessary intervals saves an additional 3.2 million kWh annually. These initiatives operate alongside waste-heat recovery, variable-frequency drive (VFD) installations, equipment upgrades, and the reduction of losses across electrical and thermal systems.
Viewed in isolation, these appear as technical figures. Cumulatively across thousands of operating hours, every kilowatt-hour saved represents resources utilized more efficiently, lower operating costs, and curtailed emissions.

Beyond energy conservation, the environmental strategy has evolved toward active carbon accounting and management. In 2022, the Phu My Fertilizer Plant launched its greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory initiative. On July 22, 2026, PVFCCo-Phu My was awarded ISO 14064-1:2018 certification for its 2025 GHG Inventory Report covering production activities at the Phu My Fertilizer Plant. By 2030, the Corporation aims to reduce total GHG emissions by 3% compared to the 2022 baseline, equivalent to approximately 17,514 tons of CO₂.
A flue-gas CO₂ recovery system has also been deployed for production purposes and commercial-grade CO₂ output, demonstrating a decisive transition from basic emission control to circular byproduct recovery and utilization.
Environmental responsibility extends beyond the plant gates. Alongside programs guiding farmers on balanced fertilizer application, PVFCCo-Phu My has scaled up the output of organic fertilizers, microbial products, water-retaining gels, and advanced resource-saving solutions. This green orientation expands further into the chemical sector with DEF Phu My Xanh—a specialized diesel exhaust fluid introduced to the market in 2025.
The "E" at Phu My thereby forms an unbroken chain: from factory floor to agricultural field, and from production line equipment to end-market solutions.
Cultivating the Value of Sharing
While the "E" is reflected through energy, resources, and emissions, the S (Social) pillar is anchored in a core value present since the early days of Phu My: the spirit of sharing.
Rooted in its profound connection with agriculture, rural areas, and farmers, social responsibility has long been a defining cultural trait of PVFCCo-Phu My. To date, the Corporation's cumulative budget for social welfare initiatives has surpassed VND 1,400 billion. Behind that figure are tens of thousands of "Great Unity" homes, hundreds of schools, STEM classrooms, healthcare clinics, rural bridges, disaster relief efforts, and continuous support programs for disadvantaged communities.
Many initiatives bear the personal touch of Phu My’s personnel, such as "A Thousand Cakes, Ten Thousand Affections," where employees personally make Chung cakes for the needy, or the distribution of hundreds of thousands of "Tet Joy with Phu My" gift packages every Lunar New Year. Over time, "sharing" has transcended conventional charity to become an enduring institutional value upheld across generations.
The "S" also reflects the Corporation’s internal commitments: regular workplace dialogues, competitive compensation structures, comprehensive healthcare and welfare coverage, hardship assistance, and the cultivation of a stable, cohesive work environment.
For farmers and clients, partnership extends beyond product supply to technical farming consultations and programs tied directly to rural development. Across provinces where the enterprise operates, PVFCCo-Phu My dedicates resources to targeted welfare programs tailored to local priorities.
Consequently, social responsibility at Phu My is evaluated not only by capital deployed for social programs, but by how the enterprise genuinely treats and respects its workforce, farming partners, customers, and society.
Governance to Sustain Long-Term Commitments
If E and S embody strategic development choices, G (Governance) provides the operational foundation that sustains those choices over the long horizon.
At PVFCCo-Phu My, corporate governance has expanded beyond compliance into transparent information disclosure, comprehensive risk management, digital transformation, business ethics, and the full integration of sustainability targets into core corporate operations.
PVFCCo-Phu My published its standalone 2025 Sustainability Report while establishing its Sustainable Development Strategy for 2026–2030 with a Vision to 2050. Environmental, social, and governance objectives are systematically incorporated into production, investment, and operational planning.
As a publicly traded corporation, PVFCCo-Phu My maintains disciplined statutory disclosures while steadily enhancing its non-financial ESG reporting. Concurrently, enterprise resource planning (ERP), centralized data infrastructure, digitized workflows, and phased AI deployment are sharpening analytical capabilities, internal oversight, and executive decision-making.
An emission reduction target is only substantive when backed by measurable data; social responsibility is only sustainable when matched with institutional resources and structured execution; and a long-term strategy can only reach fruition when an enterprise commands the capability to manage risks and adapt to disruption. This is the pivotal role of Governance in carrying ESG commitments over the long term.

22 Years: A Continuing Legacy of Sustainable Growth
Reflecting upon this 22-year journey, ESG for PVFCCo-Phu My has never been an exercise in chasing transient trends or adopting superficial frameworks. Core tenets were organically shaped through daily manufacturing, employee welfare, agricultural stewardship, community support, and corporate culture. What is evolving today is the rigorous systematization, measurement, and integration of these practices into a clear, institutionalized sustainability framework.
Being the sole enterprise in Vietnam's fertilizer and chemical industry recognized in the Top 50 ESG Leading Companies in Vietnam 2026 is a meaningful endorsement of the values steadfastly built by generations of PVFCCo-Phu My leadership and staff.
Twenty-two years ago, the journey began at a single production facility; today, the values forged there resonate across investors, customers, farming communities, and modern governance practices. The Traditional Day of September 21 serves not merely as a retrospective milestone, but as a solid springboard for PVFCCo-Phu My to safeguard its foundational heritage while advancing toward higher standards of sustainable development.
